With the numbers of Savage #4s turning up at shows in the US perhaps it is time to try to refine some of the serial number ranges. I know, as an author, that rifles are not completed in strict numerical order but perhaps we can narrow down the ranges. Here is what I have seen so far and picked up from another forum. All are marked US PROPERTY unless noted. Note: we have an overlap between 1943 dated and no date rifles, need more observations in the 51Cxxxx to 60Cxxxx range. Be sure that the year is not scrubbed off.
One Savage #4 MKI, serial number 17C5233, 1942 date, has turned up. It is a confirmed MKI not a MKI*. Does anyone else have a MKI with a serial number higher than 13C2752. Wonder if Savage was using up some surplus receivers held back as parts? Or?
I have added some serial number observations about Savage snipers and unfinished snipers.
0C1 - 1941 MKI lowest # 1941 date
0C2804 - 1941 MKI highest # 1941 date
0C3870 - 1942 MKI lowest # 1942 date
13C2752 - 1942 MKI highest MKI # 1942 date
13C2845 - 1942 MKI* lowest MKI* # 1942 date
36C1916 - 1942 MKI* highest MKI* # 1942 date
38C2632 - 1943 lowest MKI* # 1943 date
60C7797 - 1943 highest MKI* # 1943 date
51C7693 - no date lowest MKI* # with no date
0C63110 - no date highest MKI* # with no date
OC1 was converted to a sniper and is shown in Skennerton's book.
It appears that 3,000+ rifles were serial numbered in 1941 but according to Skennerton only 1,325 were completed (accepted?)
It appears that around 132,800 MKIs were made.
Need rifles in the following serial # ranges to further narrow the gaps.
0C28xx to 0C38xx for 1941 - 42 changeover.
13C27xx to 13C28xx for MKI - MKI* change over. Success! We now have a gap of only 93 at the change over point!
36C19xx to 38C26xx for 1942 - 43 changeover.
51Cxxxx to 60Cxxxx for changeover to no date.
0Cxxxxx - any serial number with 5 digits following the C ie:- 0C30228
Lend Lease legislation was passed 11 March 1941 while the first Savage(0C1?) was finished 22 July 1941 so it appears that all Savages were marked US PROPERTY. Some had US PROPERTY and other marks scrubbed when they went into service. The one millionth Savage was presented to Brig. General Guy Drewry 18 May 1944. The last Savage was produced 22 June 1944.
All Savages with 5 digits after the C were made in 1944, probably between sometime in April and end of production in June.
Savage snipers or unfinished snipers(mount bases only, no 'T' stamped, may have cheekpiece.)
1941 dated rifles - 10 noted, 3 are complete snipers with 'T' markings and scope numbers on stock, 6 have the bases installed, 1 is a standard rifle.
1942 dated rifles - 3 MKIs in the 0C3xxx to 0C5xxx range have the bases installed. 9 MKI*s in the 13Cxxxx to 15Cxxxx have the bases installed.
Thanks.

The highest number I have seen was on 20 gauge Stevens Model 311 Series H serial number E957971. The Savage branded imported doubles, over and unders or side by sides, are numbered differently. Each model is numbered in the range created by its manufacturer. Send serial number, allow 3-4 weeks for delivery. Or it may have been added at a later date. Savage marked the butt plate the stock and the frame with the.

When I have installed chipset, I have updated every necessary update except for SM Bus Controller. Sm bus controller driver gigabyte z87. Because of that I have a connection problems with my cell phon on computer etc.

My references show nothing for a model 24 Savage. If you are referring to the model 242, .410, over/under, they were manuf. from 1977-81. Hope this helps.

I too own a Savage Model 24 combination rifle/shotgun, mine is 22 magnum rifle over 20 gauge shotgun. Mine was purchased new in 1968. As I recall, they were available in the early 60's and a model of the same gun, I think, is still available today. The last new one I saw was 222 rifle over 12 gauge. As a youngster, mine served me very well.

The model 24 started out as the '.22/.410', was originally marketed as a 'Stevens', and was only available for a long time as a .22 LR over a .410.
I don't know the introduction date, or when .22MRF ,centerfire rifle barrels and larger bore shotgun barrels were introduced, but guns marked with the Westfield Mass. address were made after 1960-61. Older guns, (.22/.410's) had a barrel selector button on the side of the frame. Later guns had/have a selector switch mounted on the hammer.
That's all I know.

found this, on that site, don't know if it is correct
Stevens / Savage 24 date codes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 1949 B 1950 C 1951
D 1952 E 1953 F 1954
G 1955 H 1956 I 1957
J 1958 K 1959 L 1960
M 1961 N 1962 P 1963
R 1964 S 1965 T 1966
U 1967 V 1968 W 1969
X1970
'Collectors will find a date code stamped on every double-barrel shotgun in the Stevens brands produced between March 1949 and December 1968. Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter. The letters correspond to the years shown in the following table. Significance of the numbers is not known.'*
*From page 1101 of Ned Schwing's 2004 Standard Catalog of Firearms, 14th Edition, published by Krause Publications of Iola, WI.
I would like to add that I have found this circle, or oval, containing one or two numbers plus a single letter, just about anywhere and everywhere on the frame, but only on the outside of the frame, never inside. I have also found the circle or oval with letters and numbers on the barrel clusters, on the shot barrel or on the barrel assembly lug block. While the letter within the circle always match on factory matching barrel and frame, the numbers never match, or at least that has always been my experience. These Date Codes are also present on the Model 94 frames and barrels, andI am sure on many others.
The marks on the inside of the frame, where the lower barrel seats when closed, are what I would call assembly stampings, and match frame to barrel, found on underside of shot barrel near forend lug, and also sometimes found on the butt stock under the butt plate.

Savage introduced the Stevens Model Four-Ten in 1936, then the 'Savage' .22LR/.410 Model 24 in the late 1940's.
None had serial numbers until required by GCA-68 in 1968, and AFAIK Savage dropped the 22/.410 combination (as opposed to other combos) in 1989 - so that would put the DOM of your M24 somewhere between 1968 & 1989, depending upon exactly which version it is.
A DOM request to the Savage historian, John Gallagher, accompanied by the model, SN and a check for $15 should get you a better defined DOM.
Some had bbls welded together, while later guns had separated bbls
Some had silvered/pickled receivers, while others had blued or case-colored ones.
Some had birchwood stocks, some Walnut, and others synthetic.
Some had top-opening levers, other had side levers.
All were assigned different Model/version number/letters.
A few pics would help.

to CriscoKid:
my Savage Model 24 was around before 1964 and has a serial number on it. Can't find a letter so can't reply to abr10dr comment on the letter/date issue.

I inherited a Savage 24D - series P 22lr/.410 and really know nothing about it except that it was my grandfathers' and is probably somewhere around 50 - 60 years old.
The barrels are separated by a gap and clamped with a front sight blade assembly.
Both barrels and the trigger guard are blued to the point of appearing black.
The receiver bluing looks like it's mottled or marbled.
I'm not sure what type of wood makes up the stock and forearm.
The engraving on the right side of the receiver is: SAVAGE 24D-SERIES P
The left side has the serial number which begins with B665
The barrel engravings are:
Top barrel: .22 LONG RIFFLE
Left side of bottom barrel: PROOF TESTED .410 BORE
3 INCH CHAMBER
Right side of bottom barrel: (It looks like) SP5 -- SAVAGE ARMS --
WESTFIELD, MASS. U.S.A.
The Selector Switch is embedded in the hammer.
Both sides of the hammer are engraved with angled arrows pointed forward and back.
That's as much information as I have except to say that the Savage is in excellent condition.(My grandpa's philosophy was that if you took care of your equipment, your equipment would take care of you.)
I'm probably going to sell the shotgun and would really appreciate any information regarding the history and value of this Savage 24D.
Thanks..
